All my work has an element of function, though some more than others.
I am endlessly fascinated by the possibilities and frequently unpredictable results of working with clay.
The exploration of this intersection of intent and chance drives my work. It is perhaps ironic that this soft malleable material provides a concrete basis from which to view and experience the world.
I focus on direct forms with colors and imagery inspired by the natural world. I aim for functional work that provides a sense of ‘thisness’, is a pleasure to hold, and gets more interesting the longer you look at it.
While I could never have the time or money to explore every interest in a finite lifetime, I have dabbled in everything from philosophy and politics to writing and sculpture.
I am especially drawn to metalworking and ceramics. The tactile nature of the medium allows for intuitive shaping of the piece I’m creating, while also being quite meditative. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of finishing something concrete, made with your own brain and muscle.
My primary job is quality control. I ensure that all the clay that passes through the studio tastes delicious. I also bark at the yard and take naps.
I’m responsible for making sure that all corners of the studio are cleared of abandoned food. If I can reach it, it’s abandoned.
