A collective and teaching studio for ceramic arts in Charleston, SC

Led by Ruth Ballou and based in James Island, Doggone Studios supports beginning and experienced ceramic artists in technical skills development and creative growth. We focus on glaze chemistry, traditional and mixed techniques, and experimentation.

One studio, many visions, a few dogs

Our artists pursue interests from functional work to slipcasting in cardboard to mathematical concepts writ into clay. We’re united by a passion to try new things, an insistence on starting from first principles, and a willingness to have the occasional piece ‘altered’ by a passing dog.

Apprenticeships and visiting artists

We provide long-term apprenticeships for ceramic artists of all skill levels who are serious about improving their technical skills and developing a creative practice. We also host experienced artists for shorter-term collaborations and skill sharing.
